High Cholesterol: Blood Lipid Checks and Daily Health Management

High Cholesterol: Blood Lipid Checks and Daily Health Management

High cholesterol, also known as hyperlipidaemia, is a common health concern. Many people do not have obvious symptoms in the early stage, so it is often detected through a blood test.

A lipid profile usually includes total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and triglycerides. These results should be interpreted together with age, family history, blood pressure, blood sugar, body weight, smoking status and other health factors.

Why Lipid Levels Matter

Long-term abnormal lipid levels may increase cardiovascular risk. As each person has different risk factors, lipid management targets may differ. It is not advisable to decide on treatment or stop prescribed medicines based only on online information.

Daily Management

Daily management may include a balanced diet, reducing saturated and trans fats, increasing dietary fibre, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, stopping smoking and limiting alcohol intake.

Some individuals may require further management based on their blood test results and overall cardiovascular risk assessment by a doctor.

If you are above 40 years old, or have a family history of high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity or cardiovascular disease, consider discussing lipid screening with a doctor.
