Diabetes: Blood Sugar Checks and Daily Management

Diabetes is a common chronic metabolic condition related to persistently high blood sugar levels. Early detection, regular monitoring, healthy eating, suitable physical activity and medical follow-up can help people better manage their condition and reduce the risk of complications.

When the body cannot use insulin effectively, or does not produce enough insulin, glucose may remain elevated in the blood. Long-term poor blood sugar control may affect the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, eyes and nerves.

How Diabetes Is Checked

Diabetes is usually assessed with blood tests such as fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, oral glucose tolerance test or random blood glucose. If blood sugar is higher than normal but does not meet the criteria for diabetes, it may be considered prediabetes. This is an important stage for lifestyle changes.

Daily Management

Daily management may include controlling food portions, choosing healthier carbohydrate sources, reducing sugary drinks, staying physically active, managing body weight, monitoring blood sugar and attending regular follow-up appointments.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, medicines or insulin should be used according to medical advice. Do not stop or change the dose without consulting your doctor.

If you experience increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, slow wound healing, or have a family history of diabetes, consider consulting a doctor for suitable testing.
