High Blood Pressure: Readings, Risk Factors and Daily Management

High blood pressure is a common chronic health concern. Many people with high blood pressure do not have obvious symptoms in the early stage, so regular blood pressure checks are important.

A blood pressure reading has two numbers. The first number is systolic pressure, which reflects pressure when the heart contracts. The second number is diastolic pressure, which reflects pressure when the heart relaxes between beats.

One high reading does not always mean a person has hypertension. A doctor may consider repeated readings, home blood pressure records and overall health status before making an assessment.

Common Related Factors

Long-term uncontrolled blood pressure may increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and other cardiovascular problems. Related factors may include age, family history, excess body weight, high salt intake, lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake, stress, sleep problems and other medical conditions.

Daily Management

Daily management may include reducing salt intake, eating a balanced diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, stopping smoking, improving sleep and managing stress.

Some individuals may require medicines based on their blood pressure readings and overall risk. If you are already taking blood pressure medicines, use them as advised by your doctor and do not stop them on your own.

If blood pressure readings remain high, or if high readings occur with chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, vision changes, confusion or stroke-like symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
